Honoring Black History and the Legacy of Head Start in LaPorte County
As we celebrate Black History Month, we take a moment to recognize the incredible history of Head Start and its impact on families across the country—including here in Michigan City and LaPorte. Head Start was born out of the Civil Rights Movement and President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty, created to provide early childhood education, health services, and family support to children in underserved communities. What started as a small summer program in 1965 has now helped over 37 million children, breaking down barriers to success and paving the way for brighter futures.
Paladin’s Head Start program proudly continues this legacy, serving over 185 children in LaPorte County with the help of our dedicated team of 30 staff members. We provide quality early education to prepare children for academic success while also ensuring they receive essential health screenings, nutritious meals, and family engagement opportunities. Head Start’s wraparound services include dental care, family initiatives, immunizations, nutritious meals, and early identification of health or learning delays. Research shows that children who participate in Early Head Start demonstrate significantly better social-emotional, language, and cognitive development and while Paladin does not operate an Early Head Start program yet, we hope to in the near future!

However, programs like Head Start face constant challenges. Earlier this year during the federal funding freeze, Paladin experienced a delay in processing claims for the Head Start program, which has thankfully been resolved. But this situation was a stark reminder of how vulnerable these programs can be. Investing in early childhood education is not just about preparing kids for school—it’s about breaking the cycle of poverty and building stronger, more resilient communities for generations to come.
Black History Month is a time to honor the activists, educators, and families who have fought to ensure children of all backgrounds have access to a quality education. Their tireless efforts inspire us as we continue our work to support children and families in LaPorte County. We honor the connection between the Civil Rights Movement and Head Start, this month and throughout the year.
We also encourage our community to learn more about Paladin’s Head Start program and to advocate for ongoing investment in all early childhood education. Together, we can create a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
